Research

Shirley’s research $3.5 million research portfolio includes funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, numerous foundations and industry grants. Her research collaborations have included palliative care leaders in nursing, medicine, social work and chaplaincy from across the United States. Her research interests have focused upon the psychosocial-spiritual impact of serious illness on patients and their care partners, with a special emphasis on meeting the needs of the underserved. Findings from these studies have been published in over 100 peer-reviewed publications and disseminated in over 500 professional presentations.
